this software was made with p5.js (and p5.sound)

p5.js is a powerful visual javascript library with a lot of functionality
if you're interested in javascript and all things visually interesting, it could be worth checking out

information on settings

smoothing

strength of averaging between amplitudes of different frequency bands (has the effect of making it more reactive for lower numbers and less for higher)

bins

bins are input as a power of 2 (e.g. input 10 gives 2^10 bins [1024])
FFT analyzes a very short snapshot of sound called a sample buffer; it returns an array of amplitude measurements, referred to as bins

amplitude

relative volume

bars

number of frequency bands or bins displayed around the visualiser

radius

radius of the centre circle in pixels

factor

how many pixels a bin of full volume extends from the edge of the centre circle
recommended value of around 350 for 1080p monitors for exponents close to 1

exponent

essentially how exaggerated the graph is
specifically (volume per frequency band ^ exp) / (max volume ^ exp )
higher powers look better with higher factors as this keeps quieter frequencies at a sensible amplitude

stroke

thickness of the radial bars on the visualiser, often set higher for lower inputs of bars

bass affinity

how much the visualiser changes size depending on the volume of bassier frequencies

colour

the colour of the centre circle
